Charaka Samhita declares "Agni (digestive fire) is the root of life." When Agni is strong, one lives long and healthy. When disturbed, disease follows. When extinguished, death occurs.
The text provides detailed rules for eating: food should be warm, unctuous, in proper quantity, eaten after the previous meal is digested, in a proper place, not too fast nor too slow, without talking or laughing, with full concentration, and considering one's own constitution.
Digestive problems arise when these principles are violated.
